New publication in Journal of Mechanical Behavior and Biomedical Materials

Congratulations to Jourdan Colter, Jami Saffioti, Alex Williams, and Patrick Moran for publishing their collaborative effort titled, “Age-related changes in dynamic moduli of ovine vitreous.” The rapid degradation and low mechanical stiffness of vitreous makes it challenging to capture high rate properties quickly without interference from inertial and time-related artifacts. Our recent publication describes and validates an advanced rheometry technique that converts the immediate response of time-dependent data into high rate frequency-dependent data. The citation and approved copy of our manuscript can be found here.

World Congress of Biomechanics 2014

Members of the Developmental Head Injury Biomechanics group presented their work at the recent World Congress of Biomechanics in Boston, MA. Held every 4 years, this conference attracts biomechanical engineers and scientists from around the world. Dr. Coats chaired a session on head injury biomechanics, as well as presented her and Greg Scott’s work related to the anatomy and biomechanics of the pia-arachnoid complex. Dan Shedd presented his research on vision behavior following blast exposure and Jami Saffioti presented her work investigating changes in sclera material properties with post-mortem time and in different storage conditions.  Jourdan Colter was a finalist for the […]

Jourdan Colter finalist at World Congress of Biomechanics

Congratulations to Jourdan for becoming a finalist in the BS poster competition at the World Congress of Biomechanics held July 6-11 in Boston. She presented her research titled Dynamic Moduli of Immature Ovine Vitreous using Advanced Rheology Techniques. This project was in conjunction with work from a previous Master’s student, Patrick Moran. This is Jourdan’s first conference submission and she is the lead author on a publication resulting from this work.  Jourdan will be a MS student in the lab starting Fall 2014.

Congratulations Shaun Evans!

Congratulations to Shaun Evans who passed his thesis exam on Jun 27, 2014. His thesis, Injury Mechanisms of Abusive Head Trauma, consisted of a compilation of three studies evaluating mechanisms of brain and eye injury from infant shaking. A second congratulations is deserved as his wife gave birth to their baby girl, Hazel, later that night. Best of luck in your future endeavors Shaun!

Lab Welcomes Nnaoma Agwu to the lab.

Nnaoma Agwu, an upcoming Junior at Santa Clara University, is spending a month in the pediatric injury biomechanics lab as part of the Graduate Preparation Institute program at the University of Utah. Nnaoma will be characterizing the relaxation modulus of soft contact lenses as a comparison to some hydrogel equivalents tested earlier in our lab. Welcome to Utah Nnaoma!

Congratulations to Early June Graduates!

Many congratulation to Jami Saffioti, PhD and Greg Scott, MS for graduating!  Jami defended her PhD dissertation, “Characterization of Pediatric Ocular Material Properties for Implementation into Finite Element Modeling” on June 2, 2014. Greg defended his MS thesis, “Anatomy and Biomechanics of the Pia-Arachnoid Complex” on June 4, 2014.  It was an intense push to the end, but both succeeded marvelously.  The lab celebrated their success at the Desert Edge Brewery.
