Lizzie Rocks UROP Symposium

Congratulations to Elizabeth (Lizzie) Su for a successful UROP research experience and presentation!  Lizzie used convolutional neural networks to predict injury prior to standard methods of detection.  Results found that injury could be detected earlier than standard optical coherence tomography imaging.  She is currently working on a variety of parameters to improve predictions with the CNN and the incorporation of transfer learning to manage small image datasets. She will continue the work and submit a publication this summer. Congratulations Lizzie!!  You did an excellent job! Her poster can be viewed here.

Lab Welcomes Julia Morelli

Julia Morelli, an upcoming Sophomore at The University of Southern California, is spending her summer in the pediatric injury biomechanics lab to get insight and experience in ocular research at the University of Utah.  Julia will be characterizing and evaluating changes in epithelial cell density by examining retinas that have been exposed to a pressure blast.  We are thrilled she will be joining us.  Welcome to the lab Julia!

Award won at the SB3C!

Big congratulations to Kiffer Creveling, and Boston Terry who presented their research at the Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering, & Biotransport conference at National Harbor, Maryland.  Kiffer presented his work on the adhesion between the vitreous and the retina in his first podium talk.  Boston presented his work developing a voxel-wise algorithm to better detect mild TBI for the undergraduate student competition. Boston walked away with  first place!

International Conference on Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma

Undergraduates Kendall McMillan and Boston Terry presented their research to over 70 clinical faculty from around the world at the International Conference on Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma. Kendall’s presented his research measuring tortuosity in retinal vasculature following a retinal vein occlusion. Boston presented his research developing voxel-based analysis methods to detect DTI changes following repetitive head trauma. Both students gave phenomenal presentations and received many accolades from the clinical faculty present.  Great job you two!

UROP Presentations

Much thanks to the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) at the University of Utah for sponsoring two of our undergraduates! Mckenna Drysdale presented her research at the annual undergraduate research symposium on measuring the material properties of a novel hydrogel designed for ocular drug delivery. Boston Terry presented his work creating voxel-based analysis methods for diffusion tensor images of mild traumatic brain injury. Both did excellent jobs throughout the year and during their presentation.  Lab members were there to root both of them on. Great job McKenna and Boston!
